Case Study

Case Study Minet: Enabling a successful technology transition for a pan-African risk advisory business.

Designing and implementing a fully independent IT environment within six months across seven African markets, restoring licensing compliance and providing strategic technology leadership.

Client Overview

Minet is a pan‑African risk advisory and insurance firm operating across multiple African markets, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Namibia and Mozambique, with its head office based in Bryanston, Johannesburg. The business was spun out of global financial services firm AON as part of a strategic move to operate independently as an African‑focused organisation.

The Challenge

As part of its separation from AON, Minet was required to design and implement a fully independent IT environment within a six‑month timeframe. Previously, key hardware and software decisions had been determined centrally, leaving Minet with limited internal capability to define its own technology direction.

This challenge was compounded by the need to ensure licensing compliance, security and continuity of service while supporting teams distributed across multiple African countries.

The Solution

Minet engaged VTG to provide specialist guidance and delivery support during the transition. VTG worked closely with Minet to stabilise and modernise the organisation’s technology estate, beginning with the licensing and implementation of Microsoft Office 365 and associated security solutions.

VTG also conducted a detailed review of Minet’s server licensing, identifying that existing licences were insufficient following the separation from AON. Working collaboratively and with Minet’s best interests in mind, VTG brought the organisation back into compliance, significantly reducing exposure to potential penalties.

Managed User & Platform Support

As trust developed, VTG’s role expanded into an outsourced Chief Information Officer capacity. This provided Minet with strategic technology leadership and brought structure to an existing distributed IT support team.

The close partnership also enabled VTG to contribute to the development of a productised cyber security consulting offering that Minet intended to take to market.

Client Feedback

“I can’t emphasise enough how valuable this is to Minet, to have a technology partner that not only brings exceptional skill and knowledge to the table, but which works hard to understand our business to provide exactly what we need, when we need it.”

“If we hadn’t enlisted VTG’s services, the server licensing exercise could have cost us 30 to 40 percent more than it did.”
