Client Overview

Southern Sun is a leading hospitality group operating hotels and resorts across South Africa, the Seychelles and the Middle East. The group manages accommodation, restaurants, bars, conference and banqueting facilities, supporting both business and leisure travelers across more than 100 locations.

With operations running continuously, Southern Sun relies on stable, highly available technology platforms to support staff productivity and guest experience.

The Challenge

Following the unbundling of hotels from Tsogo Sun Holdings, Southern Sun was required to migrate its IT systems back to an independent environment. This included separating Active Directory, Exchange Online and Microsoft 365 from shared tenants and restoring full operational capability within its own environment.

The migration had to be completed entirely remotely, without engineers visiting hotel sites, and without introducing any downtime across Southern Sun’s estate. Any service interruption would have had a direct impact on hotel operations and guest services.

The Solution

Southern Sun engaged VTG to deliver the migration using a carefully planned, test‑driven approach. VTG designed the solution around remote tools and proprietary scripts developed through similar large‑scale projects, enabling complex migrations without physical site access.

A central element of the approach was the use of a pilot site, allowing extensive testing and refinement before live migration activity began. This enabled VTG to anticipate potential issues and adjust processes in advance, ensuring a smooth rollout.
